The Maldives, unhurried

In the Maldives you are not choosing a destination. You are choosing one island, and living on it. Which is why the choice deserves more than ten minutes.

About these prices. Figures are indicative, per person on twin sharing, and move with your travel month, group size, airline fare and hotel choice. They are a starting point for a conversation, not a quotation. Send us your dates and we will come back with a firm price and a written breakdown of what is and is not included.

A look at it

Maldives in pictures

The Maldives is the least forgiving destination we plan, because there is no correcting a mistake once you arrive. You cannot walk to a different restaurant or move to a better hotel. The resort you pick is the holiday. Get it right and it is the most restorative week you will ever have. Get it wrong and you are stuck with mediocre food and a house reef with nothing on it.

So we spend most of our time on the part that matters: resort selection. The variables are the meal plan, the transfer type, the quality of the house reef, whether the island is adults-only or genuinely family-friendly, and whether the villa category you are paying for actually delivers privacy. These things are not obvious from a booking website, and the difference between two resorts at the same headline price can be enormous.

We are also straightforward about cost. A Maldives trip is not cheap, and anyone quoting you an unusually low figure has almost certainly left out the seaplane transfer, put you on a bed-and-breakfast plan on an island where a single dinner costs more than a hotel night elsewhere, or both. We show you the full number up front, including transfers and taxes.

Why Maldives works for travellers from Tamil Nadu

  • The most complete switch-off available within a four-hour flight of India
  • Free 30-day visa on arrival for Indian passport holders
  • Exceptional for honeymoons, anniversaries and milestone celebrations
  • Genuine range from comfortable three-star islands to the world's best resorts
  • Local islands like Maafushi offer a far more affordable way to experience the same water

The best time to visit Maldives

There is no single right month, only the right month for what you want. Here is how the year breaks down, and what each window means for weather, crowds and price.

November to AprilThe dry season. Calm seas, clear water, best visibility for snorkelling and diving. Peak pricing from late December.
May to OctoberWet season, with short heavy showers and occasional wind. Rates fall substantially and many days are still perfect.
Late December to early JanuaryThe most expensive window of the year by a wide margin, with minimum-stay requirements at many resorts.
June to AugustPopular with Indian families despite the season, because it lines up with school holidays. Value is genuinely good.

What to do in Maldives

Choosing the transfer, which sets your budget

A speedboat transfer is cheaper and runs at most hours. A seaplane is a beautiful experience but adds significantly to the cost and only flies in daylight, which can force an extra night in Male if your flight lands late. A domestic flight plus speedboat sits in between. We match the transfer to your arrival time so you do not lose a day.

The meal plan question

Half board looks cheaper until you see the à la carte prices. On most islands, full board or all-inclusive works out better and removes the mental arithmetic from your holiday. We run the numbers for the specific resort rather than applying a general rule.

House reef quality

This is the single most underrated factor. Some islands have a living reef you can snorkel from the beach; others have a sandy lagoon and nothing to see without a boat trip. If snorkelling matters to you, tell us and we will shortlist accordingly.

Water villa or beach villa

Water villas are the photograph, but beach villas are often larger, cooler and better value, and some have private pools. For a seven-night stay we frequently suggest splitting, which gives you the overwater experience without the full cost.

Local islands, the affordable route

Maafushi and Thulusdhoo let you stay in guesthouses at a fraction of resort pricing, with day trips to sandbanks and resort day passes. Local island rules on dress and alcohol apply. For younger couples and budget-conscious families this is a genuinely good option and we plan it properly rather than dismissing it.

Celebrations, arranged in advance

Honeymoon decorations, a private sandbank dinner, a photographer, or a cake for an anniversary. These need to be requested before arrival, not at check-in. Tell us what you are celebrating and we will set it up.

A sample Maldives itinerary

A starting point, not a fixed plan. Every MilesBeyond itinerary is rebuilt around your dates, your group and the pace you actually want.

Day 1Arrive Male, transfer by speedboat or seaplane, check in and settle.
Day 2House reef snorkelling, a slow lunch, sunset from the beach.
Day 3Dolphin cruise or a sandbank picnic, spa in the afternoon.
Day 4Optional excursion, or a full day of doing nothing at all.
Day 5Private dinner or celebration setup if you are marking an occasion.
Day 6Last swim, transfer back to Male and fly home.

Who this trip suits

The Maldives is the strongest honeymoon recommendation we make, and it also works surprisingly well for families when you choose an island with a kids club and a shallow lagoon. It is not the right choice if your group wants sightseeing, shopping or variety, because there is deliberately none of that.

What a Maldives package includes

Unless your quotation says otherwise, our packages include return flights, accommodation on twin sharing, airport and inter-city transfers, the sightseeing listed in your itinerary, daily breakfast, visa or permit assistance where applicable, and our planning and on-trip support.

They exclude personal expenses, meals not specified, optional excursions, tips, travel insurance and anything arising from delays outside our control. Every quotation lists inclusions and exclusions separately, so you know exactly what you are paying for before you pay anything.

How we plan your Maldives holiday

You tell us your travel month, how many people are coming and roughly what you want to spend. We come back with a written itinerary showing the hotels by name, the transfers, and a clear price. If something does not suit you, we change it. There is no obligation, and we do not take a booking until you are happy with the plan on paper.

Once you travel, you have a real person on WhatsApp for the length of the trip. Flight delay, a hotel that is not as promised, a change of plan on day four: one message and we handle it from Coimbatore.

Maldives travel questions

Is the Maldives expensive for Indian travellers?

Resort stays are genuinely expensive, but the range is wider than most people assume. Local island guesthouses on Maafushi cost a fraction of resort pricing for the same water and beaches. We will show you options across the range rather than only the ones with the highest commission.

Do Indians need a visa for the Maldives?

No advance visa is needed. Indian passport holders receive a free 30-day visa on arrival, subject to holding a confirmed return ticket and accommodation booking. Your passport must be valid for at least six months.

Which is better, a water villa or a beach villa?

Beach villas are usually larger, cooler and better value, and several categories come with private pools. Water villas give you the direct lagoon access and the view everyone pictures. For longer stays we often suggest a few nights in each.

What is the best time to visit the Maldives?

November to April gives you the calmest seas and clearest water. May to October brings short heavy showers and better prices, and plenty of days are still excellent. If snorkelling and diving are a priority, aim for the dry season.

Is the Maldives good for a family with children?

Yes, if you choose the island carefully. You want a shallow lagoon, a kids club, family villas and a meal plan that covers children properly. Adults-only resorts exist and are clearly marked, so we steer you away from those.

How many nights should we book in the Maldives?

Four nights is the minimum for the trip to feel worthwhile after the transfers. Five to seven nights is where most of our travellers land, and honeymoon couples frequently tell us they wished they had booked one more night.
