For a family travelling from Tamil Nadu, Kashmir is a genuine change of world. The temperature, the landscape, the food, the pace of life and the light are all different from anything within a thousand kilometres of home. It is the reason Kashmir remains, decade after decade, the domestic trip people save for and talk about afterwards.
It is also the destination where a badly planned itinerary does the most damage. Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg are each a day trip from Srinagar, and cramming all three into consecutive days means three long mountain drives and very little time actually standing in a meadow. We would rather drop one and let you enjoy the other two.
We plan Kashmir with a Srinagar base, usually split between a hotel and a night on a Dal Lake houseboat, with day excursions spread out and a genuine rest day in between. We book the pony rides and gondola tickets in advance where we can, and we are upfront about what the local operators charge on the ground so you are not negotiating in the cold.
There is no single right month, only the right month for what you want. Here is how the year breaks down, and what each window means for weather, crowds and price.
| March to May | Spring. Tulip garden in early April, almond blossom, green valleys and comfortable days. Our most-recommended window. |
|---|---|
| June to August | Warm and green, with the best access to Sonmarg and the high meadows. Busiest with Indian families. |
| September to November | Autumn colour in the chinar trees, crisp air and thinner crowds. Quietly the most beautiful season. |
| December to February | Snow season. Gulmarg for skiing, Srinagar under snow. Cold is serious and some roads close, so the itinerary needs flexibility. |
A shikara ride at sunrise, when the floating vegetable market is active and the water is still, is a completely different experience from the busy afternoon version. One night on a houseboat is worth doing; more than one is usually a night too many, and we will say so.
The cable car runs in two phases, and phase two goes to nearly 4,000 metres. Tickets sell out, particularly in snow season, so we book ahead. Warm clothing and proper footwear can be hired locally and we tell you what is worth bringing from home versus renting there.
Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari are the reason to come, and they involve local taxis beyond a certain point. We build the cost of those into your quote rather than letting it appear as a surprise on the day.
The Thajiwas glacier and the drive itself are the attraction. The road is seasonal and can close, so we keep Sonmarg flexible in the plan and will swap it out rather than have you sit in a car for nothing.
Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi are best in spring and autumn. Old Srinagar, the Jamia Masjid and the papier-mâché and pashmina workshops give you a half-day that is genuinely interesting and involves no driving at all.
Kashmiri wazwan is a serious cuisine and worth one proper meal. There is also excellent vegetarian Kashmiri food, which many travellers do not expect. Tell us your preferences and we will arrange meals accordingly, including South Indian breakfast if that matters to your parents.
A starting point, not a fixed plan. Every MilesBeyond itinerary is rebuilt around your dates, your group and the pace you actually want.
| Day 1 | Arrive Srinagar, Mughal gardens, evening shikara on Dal Lake. |
|---|---|
| Day 2 | Full day Gulmarg, gondola phase one and two. |
| Day 3 | Pahalgam with Betaab Valley and Aru, overnight Pahalgam or back to Srinagar. |
| Day 4 | Rest day in Srinagar, old city and handicraft workshops. |
| Day 5 | Sonmarg day trip, weather permitting. |
| Day 6 | Houseboat night on Dal Lake, sunrise shikara. |
| Day 7 | Shopping and transfer to the airport. |
Kashmir works for almost every group when the pacing is right. For elderly travellers we reduce it to Srinagar plus one day trip with a rest day between. For honeymooners the houseboat and Pahalgam combination is hard to beat. For families with young children, spring and autumn are more comfortable than deep winter.
| Ideal duration | 5 to 7 nights |
|---|---|
| Getting there | Fly Coimbatore to Srinagar with one stop, usually via Delhi or Mumbai |
| Altitude | Srinagar 1,585m; Gulmarg gondola reaches nearly 4,000m |
| What to pack | Layers year-round; serious winter wear December to February |
| Permits | None required for Indian citizens on the standard circuit |
| Best suited to | Families, honeymooners, photographers, first-time snow travellers |
Unless your quotation says otherwise, our packages include return flights, accommodation on twin sharing, airport and inter-city transfers, the sightseeing listed in your itinerary, daily breakfast, visa or permit assistance where applicable, and our planning and on-trip support.
They exclude personal expenses, meals not specified, optional excursions, tips, travel insurance and anything arising from delays outside our control. Every quotation lists inclusions and exclusions separately, so you know exactly what you are paying for before you pay anything.
You tell us your travel month, how many people are coming and roughly what you want to spend. We come back with a written itinerary showing the hotels by name, the transfers, and a clear price. If something does not suit you, we change it. There is no obligation, and we do not take a booking until you are happy with the plan on paper.
Once you travel, you have a real person on WhatsApp for the length of the trip. Flight delay, a hotel that is not as promised, a change of plan on day four: one message and we handle it from Coimbatore.
Tell us the month, the number of travellers and anything that matters to you. A planner replies with real options and a real price.
The main tourist circuit of Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg sees large numbers of Indian families every year and is routinely visited without incident. Conditions can change, so we monitor advisories and stay in contact with you throughout the trip. If we had concerns about your specific dates we would tell you plainly.
December through February is reliable snow season, with January typically the deepest. Gulmarg holds snow into March. If you want snow without extreme cold, late February and early March are a good compromise.
Five nights covers Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam comfortably. Six or seven nights lets you add Sonmarg and keep a rest day, which makes a real difference for families travelling with parents or small children.
Yes, for the experience of waking up on the lake. Two nights is usually one too many, since houseboats are charming rather than comfortable by hotel standards. We typically place the houseboat night at the end of the trip.
Srinagar has a few options and most hotels can arrange simple South Indian breakfast with advance notice. Outside Srinagar it is limited. We flag this at the planning stage and arrange what we can rather than leaving you to find out on day three.
Indian citizens need no permits for the standard Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg circuit. Some high-altitude areas beyond this have restrictions, and we will tell you if your itinerary touches any of them.
Tell us your dates and who is travelling. We will build the trip around you and stay available while you are away.
