Kerala is on our doorstep. Munnar is a four-hour drive from Coimbatore, which makes it tempting to treat the whole state as a two-day getaway. But the genuinely good version of a Kerala holiday moves slowly: a couple of nights in the hills, a night on the water, a couple of days on the coast, and time in between to not be in a vehicle.
The mistake we see most often is a five-destination itinerary in four days. Munnar to Thekkady is four hours on winding roads. Thekkady to Alleppey is another four. Add Kochi and Varkala and you have a holiday that is mostly a car journey. We would rather give you three places and let you enjoy them.
Because Kerala is our home region, we know the properties rather than just the listings. We know which Munnar resorts actually have the view, which Alleppey houseboat operators keep their boats properly, and which Thekkady stays are worth the premium. That local knowledge is the main thing we bring to a Kerala trip.
There is no single right month, only the right month for what you want. Here is how the year breaks down, and what each window means for weather, crowds and price.
| October to March | The main season. Pleasant everywhere, dry, and the best conditions for the backwaters and the coast. |
|---|---|
| April and May | Hot on the coast but Munnar stays comfortable. Good value and fewer visitors. |
| June to August | Monsoon. Munnar and Thekkady are spectacular in the rain and rates are at their lowest. Traditional Ayurveda season. |
| September | Onam season, green and beautiful, with the snake boat races if your dates line up. |
The tea estates are the obvious draw, and Top Station and Mattupetty are worth the morning. But Munnar is best on foot: a plantation walk at dawn, the tea museum, and the drive out to Kolukkumalai for sunrise if you are willing to be up at four. We will tell you whether the jeep road is worth it for your group.
The boat safari on Periyar lake is the standard activity, and the early morning slot is the only one worth booking. The bamboo rafting and guided nature walks are considerably better, and far fewer people do them. Thekkady also has the spice plantations, which are genuinely interesting rather than a shopping stop.
One night is the correct amount. Boats board around noon, cruise the main channels, moor in a quiet backwater for the night, and disembark after breakfast. Quality varies enormously between operators, particularly on food and on whether the air conditioning runs all night. We book operators we have used before.
Fort Kochi, the Chinese fishing nets, the Jewish quarter in Mattancherry, and an evening Kathakali performance. It is walkable, which is a relief after mountain roads, and the cafés are good.
Varkala for the cliff and a younger crowd, Kovalam for infrastructure and convenience, Marari for a quiet beach and almost nothing to do. We match this to your group rather than defaulting to Kovalam.
There is a real difference between a hotel spa massage and a genuine Ayurvedic programme with a doctor consultation and a prescribed diet. Both are valid; they cost very different amounts and take very different lengths of time. We will explain which one you are booking.
A starting point, not a fixed plan. Every MilesBeyond itinerary is rebuilt around your dates, your group and the pace you actually want.
| Day 1 | Drive Coimbatore to Munnar, afternoon tea estate walk. |
|---|---|
| Day 2 | Munnar sightseeing, Mattupetty and Echo Point, free evening. |
| Day 3 | Drive to Thekkady, spice plantation, evening Kalaripayattu. |
| Day 4 | Early Periyar boat safari, then drive to Alleppey. |
| Day 5 | Houseboat overnight on the backwaters. |
| Day 6 | Disembark, transfer to the coast or to Kochi. |
| Day 7 | Fort Kochi morning, drive back to Coimbatore. |
Kerala is our easiest recommendation for a first family trip with elderly parents, because the driving can be broken up, the food is familiar, and medical facilities are good throughout. It is equally strong as a quiet honeymoon, particularly the hills-plus-houseboat combination.
| Ideal duration | 4 to 7 nights |
|---|---|
| Getting there | Road from Coimbatore, about 4 hours to Munnar; Kochi airport for flights |
| Currency | Indian Rupee |
| Best season | October to March; monsoon is excellent for Ayurveda and the hills |
| Typical pace | Two or three bases, with driving days kept under four hours |
| Best suited to | Families, couples, short breaks, wellness travellers, elderly parents |
Unless your quotation says otherwise, our packages include return flights, accommodation on twin sharing, airport and inter-city transfers, the sightseeing listed in your itinerary, daily breakfast, visa or permit assistance where applicable, and our planning and on-trip support.
They exclude personal expenses, meals not specified, optional excursions, tips, travel insurance and anything arising from delays outside our control. Every quotation lists inclusions and exclusions separately, so you know exactly what you are paying for before you pay anything.
You tell us your travel month, how many people are coming and roughly what you want to spend. We come back with a written itinerary showing the hotels by name, the transfers, and a clear price. If something does not suit you, we change it. There is no obligation, and we do not take a booking until you are happy with the plan on paper.
Once you travel, you have a real person on WhatsApp for the length of the trip. Flight delay, a hotel that is not as promised, a change of plan on day four: one message and we handle it from Coimbatore.
Tell us the month, the number of travellers and anything that matters to you. A planner replies with real options and a real price.
Four nights covers Munnar and Alleppey comfortably. Six or seven nights lets you add Thekkady and the coast without long driving days. Because you are driving rather than flying, a three-night weekend to Munnar alone is also a perfectly good trip.
Not at all, depending on what you want. Munnar and Thekkady are at their most beautiful in the rain, rates drop significantly, and it is the traditional season for Ayurvedic treatment. Beaches and backwaters are less appealing in heavy rain, so we adjust the itinerary.
Yes, and in our experience it is the right amount. Boats board at noon and disembark after breakfast, which gives you an afternoon cruise, a sunset, a night moored in a quiet channel and a morning on the water. A second night adds cost without adding much.
Munnar for scenery, tea estates and cool weather. Thekkady for wildlife, spice plantations and a slower atmosphere. Most itineraries include both, since they are four hours apart, but if you only have time for one we would usually say Munnar.
Absolutely, and many of our Kerala trips are planned exactly this way with a private car and driver. It removes airport time entirely and gives you flexibility to stop along the way, which is particularly useful when travelling with children or elderly parents.
October to March, when the weather is dry and the channels are pleasant. December and January are peak season with peak pricing. September is lovely and green if you can travel just after the monsoon.
Tell us your dates and who is travelling. We will build the trip around you and stay available while you are away.
