Malaysia, better value than you expect

Malaysia is the quietly sensible choice in Southeast Asia. Kuala Lumpur is a genuinely good city with excellent food and hotels at half the Singapore price. An hour away, Genting Highlands gives you cool weather and a theme park. A short flight from there, Langkawi has beaches and duty-free shopping.

For Tamil travellers there is a further advantage: Malaysia has a large Tamil community. Tamil is widely spoken in Kuala Lumpur, there are Tamil restaurants in every neighbourhood, and Batu Caves with its Murugan statue is a genuine pilgrimage site as well as a tourist attraction.

We plan Malaysia as two or three bases over six to eight nights. The mistake to avoid is treating it as a one-city trip, because Kuala Lumpur alone is two days of sightseeing and you will have paid for the flight either way.

The best time to visit Malaysia

There is no single right month, only the right month for what you want. Here is how the year breaks down, and what each window means for weather, crowds and price.

December to February	The most reliable weather across the west coast and Langkawi.
March to May	Hot but generally dry. Good value before the mid-year crowds.
June to August	Popular with Indian families for school holidays; occasional showers.
September to November	Wetter on the west coast, with the lowest prices of the year.

What to do in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur in two days

Petronas Towers and the KLCC park, the Batu Caves in the morning before the heat, Merdeka Square and the old colonial quarter, and an evening at Jalan Alor for food. Bukit Bintang for shopping. Two days covers it comfortably.

Batu Caves, and when to go

272 painted steps up to a limestone cave temple with the world's tallest Murugan statue at the base. Go before nine in the morning: cooler, quieter and better light. Dress modestly, as it is an active temple.

Genting Highlands

An hour from Kuala Lumpur and around fifteen degrees cooler. The cable car up is the best part, and there is a theme park, a casino and a Chin Swee temple. One night is usually enough; two if you have children.

Langkawi

Beaches, the SkyCab cable car and Sky Bridge, island hopping by boat, and duty-free shopping. Quieter than Phuket and considerably cheaper. Three nights here turns a city trip into a proper holiday.

Penang, for food and heritage

George Town is a UNESCO heritage site with street art, Peranakan mansions and arguably the best street food in Malaysia. Worth two nights if food is a priority for your group.

Malacca, as a day trip

Two hours from Kuala Lumpur, with Dutch and Portuguese colonial architecture, a river walk and Jonker Street night market. A good option if you want something beyond the capital without flying.

You tell us your travel month, how many people are coming and roughly what you want to spend. We come back with a written itinerary showing the hotels by name, the transfers, and a clear price. If something does not suit you, we change it. There is no obligation, and we do not take a booking until you are happy with the plan on paper.
