Lakshadweep, India's quietest water

Lakshadweep is thirty-six coral islands off the Kerala coast, of which only a few are open to tourists, and every visitor needs a permit issued in advance. The result is water as clear as anywhere in the Indian Ocean with a tiny fraction of the visitors.

It is also, practically speaking, the most constrained destination we plan. Flights go only to Agatti and the aircraft are small, so seats are limited and expensive. Inter-island transfers depend on boats and on the weather. Accommodation ranges from government-run resorts to a small number of private properties, and it books out months ahead.

None of that is a reason not to go. It is a reason to plan early and to be realistic. A Lakshadweep trip booked three months out with permits in hand is smooth. One booked three weeks out usually is not, and we will tell you that rather than take the booking and hope.

The best time to visit Lakshadweep

There is no single right month, only the right month for what you want. Here is how the year breaks down, and what each window means for weather, crowds and price.

October to March	The main season. Calm seas, clear water and reliable flights. December and January are busiest.
April and May	Hot but the water is at its clearest, which suits divers.
June to September	Monsoon. Ship services stop, sea conditions are rough and most tourism shuts down.
Mid-December to early January	Peak demand. Book three to four months ahead or expect no availability.

What to do in Lakshadweep

Agatti, where you arrive

The airport island, with a lagoon that begins at the runway's edge. Many travellers base themselves here because onward transfers are weather dependent. Snorkelling straight off the beach is excellent and the sunsets are exceptional.

Bangaram

An uninhabited island with a single resort, ringed by a lagoon and reachable by boat from Agatti. This is the closest thing India has to a private-island holiday, and it is the option most honeymoon couples choose.

Kadmat, for divers

A long thin island with a wide lagoon on one side and dive sites on the other. The dive school here is well established and takes complete beginners. If underwater time is your priority, Kadmat is the island to ask about.

Kavaratti

The administrative capital, with the Ujra mosque, a marine aquarium and good lagoon swimming. It gives you a sense of how people actually live on these islands rather than only the resort experience.

Snorkelling and diving

The reefs here are in better condition than most in South Asia, with visibility regularly beyond twenty metres in season. Even a first-time snorkeller floating in the Agatti lagoon sees more than they expect.

What to know before you book

Alcohol is prohibited on all inhabited islands. Accommodation is simpler than Maldives resorts, and that is part of the character rather than a failing. Mobile connectivity is limited. Permits take time and cannot be rushed.

Lakshadweep suits travellers who want water quality above hotel luxury. Accommodation is comfortable rather than lavish, and that trade is the whole point. It is excellent for honeymoon couples and for divers, and less suitable for groups wanting nightlife, shopping or variety.
