The Andamans, without the rush

The Andamans are the rare Indian destination that competes directly with Southeast Asian beaches and wins on several counts. Radhanagar on Havelock is wide, white and backed by forest rather than concrete. The snorkelling at Elephant Beach is genuine, and the water at Neil Island is as clear as anywhere in the Maldives.

What trips people up is the logistics. Everything runs on inter-island ferries with fixed timings, which sell out in season. A badly planned Andaman itinerary means you spend half your holiday at jetties, or you miss a ferry and lose a day. We book the ferries at the time we book the hotels, not afterwards.

There is also real history here. The Cellular Jail at Port Blair, where Indian independence prisoners were held, is worth doing properly with the evening light and sound show rather than as a forty-minute stop. Most packages treat it as a box to tick.

The best time to visit Andaman

There is no single right month, only the right month for what you want. Here is how the year breaks down, and what each window means for weather, crowds and price.

November to February	The best window. Calm seas, clear water and reliable ferries. Peak pricing in December.
March to May	Hot but still good, with the best underwater visibility of the year.
June to September	Monsoon. Ferries are frequently cancelled and many water activities stop. We generally advise against it.
October	Transitional. Improving rapidly through the month, with good value before the season starts.

What to do in Andaman

Havelock and Radhanagar Beach

Radhanagar is the reason to come. Wide, white, backed by mahua forest, and best in the late afternoon when the light goes gold. Havelock deserves three nights minimum, and most travellers who give it two wish they had given it three.

Elephant Beach and snorkelling

Reached by speedboat from Havelock, with live coral and good fish life in shallow water. It gets busy from mid-morning, so we book the earlier boat. Equipment is provided and no experience is needed.

Neil Island

Quieter than Havelock, with Bharatpur and Laxmanpur beaches and the natural rock bridge. Two nights here is the difference between a beach trip and a genuinely restful one. The sunsets at Laxmanpur are the best in the islands.

The Cellular Jail at Port Blair

Visit in the afternoon and stay for the evening light and sound show, which tells the story of the prisoners held here. It is a significant piece of Indian history and deserves more than a quick walk through.

Scuba diving for beginners

The Andamans are one of the easiest places in India to try scuba for the first time. A discover-scuba dive requires no certification and takes half a day. For certified divers the sites off Havelock are excellent.

Ross Island and North Bay

A half-day boat trip from Port Blair covering the ruins of the old British administrative headquarters, now overgrown and inhabited by deer, and a glass-bottom boat over the reef at North Bay. Good for a first or last day.

The Andamans work very well for families with children old enough to enjoy a boat, and for honeymoon couples who want a beach without leaving India. Mobile connectivity is limited outside Port Blair, which most travellers end up appreciating.
